About Andreas Johnsson

I am a planetary geomorphologist with an interest in land surface processes and landforms on planet Mars. My research interests span from permafrost dynamics on Mars to terrestrial analogues, and astrobiology. My research focus is periglacial and glacial landforms on Earth and Mars and paleoclimate reconstruction of Late Amazonian climate on Mars. A main objective of my work is to increase our understanding of the role of water and ice in shaping the martian landscape in recent geologic time.

Since 2007 I have conducted annual field work in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. Svalbard represent a useful analogue for Mars periglacial and glacial landscapes where many landforms occur in similar assemblages. Work include remote sensing, aerial/satellite image interpretation and ground truth.

Ongoing projects:

  • Periglacial landforms on Mars and their implications for late climate change and habitability (SNSB 2013-16)
  • Svalbard Permafrost Landforms and Analogues for Mars (2008-present)
  • Mapping the northern plains of Mars: Origins, evolution and response to climate change (ISSI 2014-16)
  • Multitemporal analysis of debris flow activity on Svalbard (ESA 2015-16)
