Aksel Sundström är docent i statsvetenskap och lektor.
Han var Democracy Fellow vid Harvard University 2017-2018 och gästforskare vid University of Oxford, våren 2022.
Ansvarig för att utveckla Quality of Government (QoG) institutets dataset och leder QoGs data team, en plattform för öppen data kring korruption och andra samhällsindikatorer.
Tilldelades nyligen ett ERC Starting Grant, som skall finansiera projektet Female Leaders and African Droughts (Fem-LEAD).
Sundström har två större forskningsintressen; 1) studiet av miljöpolitik, särskilt i låginkomstländer och 2) studiet av politisk representation, särskilt med ett fokus på kvinnor och ungas frånvaro i institutioner runt om i världen.
Inom det större temat kring miljöpolitik undersöker Sundström flertalet frågeställningar: Han arbetar med flera projekt finansierade av Vetenskapsrådet som studerar olika politiska dimensioner av skyddade naturreservat i afrikanska länder. Förutom ett fokus på jämförande miljöpolitik så har han bred erfarenhet av datainsamling i Sydafrika och dess grannländer. Hans doktorsavhandling undersökte problemet med korruption och mutor bland statliga inspektörer i naturresurs-hantering (se exempel i Global Environmental Change och Public Administration). Han arbetar för närvarande med att förstå hur miljörelaterade shocker påverkar attityder och politiskt beteende.
Inom temat kring politisk representation studerar Sundström en rad kunskapsluckor. I flertalet uppsatser har han utvecklat insikterna kring hur man kan förstå processer kring kvinnors politiska närvaro och rättigheter runt om i världen. Med kollegor inom projektet Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) har han lanserat 'Women's Political Empowerment Index', en datamängd som är öppen för att laddas ned (se Sundström et al. 2017). För exempel på arbete kring allmänhetens stöd för kvinnliga ledare i Afrikanska länder, se artikel i Public Opinion Quarterly.
Han har gett ut boken Youth without Representation, som undersöker ungas låga närvaro som kandidater och politiker runt om i världen (University of Michigan Press). Boken (skriven med Daniel Stockemer) är den första som tar sig an detta problem och då den blivit utvald till ett open access initiativ är den gratis att ladda ned.
Sundströms forskning har publicerats i flertalet artiklar, bland annat i tidskrifterna Electoral Studies, European Journal of Political Research, Governance, Party Politics, och World Development (se Google Scholar).
Sundström handleder flertalet doktorander (varav en nyligen disputerade). Han var tidigare profilansvarig för ämnet statsvetenskap inom Samhällsvetenskapligt miljövetarprogram (SMIL) på Handelshögskolan.
