In this talk Michael Frost will discuss the episcopate in five island bishoprics within the Norwegian ecclesiastical province during the period 1230-1470, describing how the characteristics and career paths of these bishops varied between the different dioceses and how they evolved over time. He will also examine how these developments reflect the political and ecclesiological context both within Scandinavia and the wider Church.
Michael Frost studied Anglo-Saxon Norse & Celtic at the University of Cambridge and then completed his PhD at the University of Aberdeen as part of the broader research project ‘A Prosopographical Study of Bishops’ Careers in Northern Europe’.
He is currently working on the project ’The Backgrounds and Early Careers of Swedish Bishops in the Late Middle Ages’, funded by the Gustav Adolfs Akademi via the Bernadotte Programme.
