Research Areas

  • Science and technology studies
  • Relationship between lay/expert knowledge
  • Science policy studies (focus on fisheries governance & maritime management)
  • Public understanding of science/ science and the media

Background

Sebastian received an interdisciplinary academic education at the universities of Berlin, Bergen/ Norway, Jena and Bielefeld (MA in Biology 2000, Free University of Berlin; PhD 2005 in History of Science, University of Jena/ Germany). From 2007 until 2010 he was postdoctoral researcher at the section for Science and Technology Studies at the University of Gothenburg.

His research interests centre on the relationship between science, politics and society with focus on the communication of scientific knowledge in different academic and public spheres. In his thesis he studied the relation between science and the media with a case study of the sociobiology controversy.

Current research focuses on the role of science and scientific expertise in environmental politics by combining approaches from of Science and Technology Studies, Science Communication and Human Ecology. A detailed case study investigates the relation between lay and expert knowledge in fisheries management at different levels, reaching from local and regional to transnational and global experiences.

Sebastian has also an interdisciplinary teaching experience reaching from natural to social science disciplines. He previously taught ecology to undergraduate students and is now teaching about theory of science and science-policy relations in environmental issues at the University of Gothenburg.
