About Fredrik Olsson

Current work
I work as a pedagogical developer at the unit for Pedagogical Development and Interactive Learning (PIL) since 2018. I have been a been a course coordinator for different versions of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 1 (HPE101), a teacher on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 2 at the Faculty of Education (HPE102), Supervision in Postgraduate Programmes (HPE201), Assessment and Examination (HPE303), Supervision of Writing Assignments and Degree Projects (HPE304), as well as a supervisor on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 3 (HPE103). Furthermore, I am a member of the editorial board of the unit. I also teach Spanish at the Department of Languages and Literatures.

Background
I have been teaching at the University of Gothenburg since 2010, primarily Spanish language and literature. I have been a course coordinator, teacher and supervisor on a number of courses on Bachelor and Master’s level, in particular on the Teacher Education Programme. Among other things, I have been responsible for courses in teaching practice (VFU) in modern languages and English, language and literature didactics, and supervised degree projects in Spanish and English. I have also given courses in Spanish and Latin American literature, written and oral proficiency, translation, grammar, and more.

In 2015, I defended my doctoral thesis in Spanish at the University of Gothenburg and the University of Seville: “Me voy pal Norte”. La configuración del sujeto migrante indocumentado en ocho novelas hispanoamericanas actuales (1992-2009). In the thesis, I explore the representation of undocumented migration from the US in eight contemporary Latin American novels. The thesis was awarded second prize in the in the competition “Nuestra América” 2015 for best monograph about Latin America within the subject areas of history, literature and the arts, and subsequently published by Editorial CSIC in Madrid.

I spent the spring of 2017 as a postdoc in Mexico with a project on the representation of the family in recent Latin American migration literature. Apart from my research interest in contemporary Spanish language literature and literary and cultural theory, I am also interested in language and literature didactics as well as decolonial and norm-critical perspectives on teaching and learning in higher education.

From 2018 to 2020, I was involved in the collaboration OESJ – Open Education and Social Justice, financed by SASUF (Sweden - South Africa University Forum). The project comprised University of Cape Town and University of the Western Cape, University of Gothenburg and University West. The aim of the project was to create a theoretical framework departing from Nancy Fraser’s theory on social justice and analyse the conditions for implementing open textbooks in South Africa and Sweden.

I am also a certified secondary and upper secondary school teacher in Spanish and English.
