About Kerstin Gunnemark

Research

Her research profile is related to urban life, memories and cultural heritage. In her thesis Hembygd i storstad (1998), she has analyzed memories of everyday life and local identifications. Her research has also been focusing experiences of modernity during the 1950s, and she has been supervisor for a group of suburban inhabitants when they created the very first museum in Sweden shaping young families homes in modern suburbs during 1955-1965. Kerstin Gunnemark has been working in different projects with an emphasis on living, memories and artifacts. She is initiator to a North European network with researchers, archive and museum employees who have written articles with focus on tangble and intagible heritage of summer life in the anthology Sommarliv - minnen, drömmar och materialitet (2016). Her research about memories and life stories is also expressed though her interpretations of a narrative competition in the book Ung på 50-talet (2006). She has given attention to issues concerning methodology, and this field of interest is evident in the anthology Etnografiska hållplatser – om metodprocesser och reflexivitet (2011). In this book she has, for instance, written about a kind of workshop she has developed with the aim to encourage participants to write autobiographies. Her present research includes narratives about living in old small houses in the city with biographical perspectives of a neigbourhood during 100 years.

Teaching

As a professor in ethnology, she is teaching second-cycle students as well as supervising PhD students. She has also been engaged in the development of courses in Ethnology and Cultural Analysis and interdisciplinary programs such as ‘Cultural Heritage Studies’ and ‘Cultural Heritage and Modernity’.
