About Anders Hultqvist

Anders Hultqvist is Professor of Composition, Proprefekt, and Viceprefekt for research at the Academy of Music and Drama, GU.

The various composition projects consist of works for orchestra, solo with orchestra, choral works, various chamber music constellations, sound installations, musical drama, electroacoustic works, as well as film and theater music. One of the orchestra projects involved new stagings of Beethoven's 5th Symphony and "Albinoni's Adagio with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Stefan Östersjö and Andrew Manze. Further examples are the sound installation Invisible Sounds and the ensemble works Entropic Pleasures (vers. I- III) and Disembodied which were written for Ensemble Mimitabu and KammarensembleN respectively.

Some of the more extensive artistic research projects include Composition at the limits of the conceptual. A shrinking emptiness - meaning, chaos and entropy (2015-19) which explored the artistic creation of meaning in musical and literary composition. The project is summarized in the report Boundaries and Infinities - Musical and Literary Composition (Gränser och oändligheter – Musikalisk och litterär komposition, ArtMonitor). The research project Towards an expanded field of art music was a three-year project around the work concept and our interpretational musical tradition. The project was partly presented in VR's (The national research councils) yearbook 2014. See also article in Journal for artistic research (JAR); “Who creates the creator" - and the limits of interpretation? The two projects Transmission – Urban experiments in Sound art and Sonic space and Into Noise (2005-2011) were carried out within the research group USIT – Urban Sound Institute. Transmission is presented, among other things, in the Swedish Research Council's yearbook 2007.

Hultqvist has a PhD in musicology (artistic creative track) from the University of Gothenburg. The dissertation takes compositional practices as its point of departure when discussing artistic, cognitive, physiological and social perspectives on artistic creation.
