About Henric Benesch

I am trained as an architect at Chalmers University of Technology and acquired a PhD in Design at Academy of Design and Craft at GU in 2010. Ever since, I´ve been working in a number of interdisciplinary research projects in a national context: "The passion for the real" (VR 2006-2008), "Interventions - Art in Urban Life and Planning" (VR 2007-2009) and "Interplace - The interplay between citizen initiatives and invited participation in urban planning: An interaction research project" (Formas 2011-2013), as well as an European context: "TRADERS - 'Training Art and Design Researchers in Participation for Public Space" (FP7-PEOPLE-2013-ITN 2013-2017) and "Critical Heritage Studies and the Future of Europe - Towards an integrated, interdisciplinary and transnational training model in cultural heritage research and management" (H2020-MSCA-ITN 2017-2021), my focus-area has been design with regard to critical spatial practice and institutional aspects of participation and knowledge production. Since 2013 I am active at the Centre for Critical Heritage Studies (CCHS), where I run a platform - Curating the city - together with colleagues at the Department of Conservation at GU and University College London.

Ongoing work with colleagues in design, educational research and law, framed as "The Right to Design", address design as a form of literacy and prerequisite for informed citizenship which therefore should not be limited to its current institutional settings. In parallell I explore issues of visibility in the context of socially, culturally and professionally distributed knowledge about environmental toxins in built environments, framed as "Toxic Heritage", together with colleagues with in film, photography, conservation, social sciences, IT and architecture.

I currently supervise 3 doctoral students: Annelies Vaneycken, Franz James and Moniek Driesse.
