About Johanna Andersson Assarsson

Johanna Andersson Assarsson has a PhD in medicine and a M.Sc. in chemistry. She is a researcher at the Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine and research coordinator for the Swedish Obese Subjects (SOS) study.

Research: Johanna defended her thesis in 2005 at the Department of Pathology at the University of Gothenburg and her PhD-project focused on the role of mutations in tyrosine kinase receptors for the prognosis and treatment of gastrointestinal stromal cell tumors (GIST). After her dissertation, she moved to London for a postdoc at Imperial College London, at the Department of Genomics of Common Disease, School of Public Health. While in London, Johanna worked with large-scale genetic analyzes (GWAS and CNV) in obesity.

Since 2010, Johanna has worked in the SOS study. The SOS study started in 1987 and includes 4047 individuals. The study examines the long-term effects of weight loss through bariatric surgery. Her main research areas are obesity and related disease (diabetes and cardiovascular disease), often with a focus on genetics. Current research projects are focused on clonal hematopoiesis in obesity, obesity-related disease, and long-term outcomes after bariatric surgery.
