Åsa Bergman, Associate professor in Musicology, Senior Lecturer in Cultural Studies

Research

In her doctoral dissertation from 2009, Growing up with music. Young people’s use of music in school and during leisure time, teenager's identiy cretion in relation to music was explored. The dissertation, was based on a longitudinal ethnographical study, conducted in a secondary school in Gothenburg.

In the current research project: Classical music for a mediatized world, founded by the Swedish Research Council, the purpose is to develop a comprehensive understanding of classical music as a contemporary cultural and mediatized phenomenon. In the sub-study I run, focus is directed towards examining representations of classical music as they appear in the marketing strategies and advertising materials of leading concert institutions.

Teaching

Since her dissertation in 2009, Åsa has taught, supervised and been responsible for courses in Musicology and Cultural Sciences and has also been involved in a large amount of course development work. The teaching has been carried out at both undergraduate courses and on advanced level and has also included supervision at doctoral level.
