This chapter analyzes empirical material that helps provide an explanation for how and why some Chinese firms are becoming leaders. We do so by investigating seven empirical trends, within the Chinese knowledge-intensive innovative ecosystems, which are opening up new opportunities for technology, innovation and globalization. This chapter also provides details of the empirical context for later chapters. It do so by providing evidence on how the set of opportunities is rapidly expanding, through the development of new markets, new technologies, and new business knowledge. In doing so, we suggest that the seven empirical trends offer evidence of transformation. In doing so, we argue they demonstrates a vast increase in three types of opportunities – namely market, technological and productive opportunities. Taken together, the detailed data, including the S&T human resources, the R&D investment, and the globalization of science and technology. They illustrate the performance of the Chinese ecosystem in recent decades, and suggest how may affect firm search, and thereby the development of Chinese firms’ capabilities in technology, innovation and globalization.
