While often viewed as a tradition, a materiality or a way of life, heritage is also a product of narration and communication where artefacts, places and values are given context and meaning through various representations. These representations of heritage that we meet not only in museums or scientific works, but also in popular culture and as active identities, are the result of an ongoing negotiation with the past that includes a large number of co-creators. The communicative conventions these representations make use of make up a large part of the public’s apprehension of what cultural heritage is.
