Toward intergrative interviewing: the role of situation awareness

Sammanfattning

Current work in the field of investigative interviewing has produced a number of important techniques that are beneficial to the interrogation process. Comparative examinations of these techniques have shed light on their individual advantages. Nonetheless, real-world investigative interview scenarios seldom provide best-fit settings for single approaches. This is because investigative interviewing is a fluid social interaction that may require interviewers to adapt to interviewees on case-by-case basis. Unusual characteristics and/or self-regulation tactics of an interviewee may call for a combination or change in interview style. A predetermined single approach may be inadequate for optimal results. The present article discusses adopting situation awareness (SA) as a precursor for determining integrative ways to conduct interviews. The crux of SA pivots on perceiving relevant aspects of a situation, comprehending said aspects and projecting their condition in the near future. Accurate SA is likely to position an interviewer to adapt strategically to an interviewee. I discuss SA’s adaptation and application to investigative interviewing. Furthermore I propose possible directions for empirical assessment and application of SA in the interview setting.
