Sammanfattning

The present report deals with the results from ten seasons of excavations at the Late Bronze Age harbor city of Hala Sultan Tekke near Larnaca. The excavations were supported by large-scale geophysical prospecting including georadar and magnetometers resulting in the discovery of several city quarters, the cemetery and – recently – the possible city wall. These surveys indicated that the size of the city seems to exceed 25 hectares. The rich finds established the multicultural nature of the societies of the city whose wealth was based on the export of copper and purple-dyed textiles. According to the origin of imported and provenance studies of exported objects, cultural connections from Sardinia to Mesopotamia and from Scandinavia to Egypt could be ascertained in the period from 1650 to 1150 BCE. In the 12th century BCE, the era of the “Sea Peoples phenomenon”, the once flourishing city was destroyed and abandoned.
