About Erik Smedler

Background

I am a resident physician in psychiatry at Sahlgrenska University Hospital (SU) and research group leader at Gothenburg University (GU) with support from the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine and the Swedish Research Council. Prior to that, I did my MD-PhD at Karolinska Institutet and MSc in engineering physics at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. My thesis was focused on neural networks and calcium signaling. I did my postdoc in the group of Mikael Landén at GU 2017-2019 and medical internship at SU.

Resarch interests

My research is focused on bipolar disorder, with emphasis on neural development. My line of research is on how disturbances in the development of neural networks lead to manifest psychiatric illness, with focus on the calcium channel gene CACNA1C. At the moment, we are developing IPS cell-based models of bipolar patients in conjunction with clinical data from patients.
