Abstract: Issues of institutions and development have attracted wider and renewed interest in the last few years particularly so following the financial crisis. This resurgence of interest makes it timely to take stock of the experience and lessons in the area, but also to assess newer emerging challenges. This seminar will reflect on broad lessons of experience and also ask whether ideas such as ‘independent institutions’ are likely to lead to better social outcomes.
