In this lecture, you will learn more about the importance of co-design, co-creative design and the inclusion of children and young people in urban development processes. The city of Gothenburg was early on in developing methods to involve children and young people in urban development. In 2003, the concept of architectural pedagogy was created as a way of working, and through the long-term collaboration with the academy, the city has developed methods to include children and young people in planning, shaping, building and managing the sustainable city. Welcome to learn more about Child Culture Design and the role of architecture education in urban development.

The MFA master's programme in Child Culture Design started 15 years ago at HDK-Valand. The programme is based on multidisciplinary perspectives, where inclusive research and knowledge from psychology, pedagogy and sociology are at the center. A large part of the education is centered around methods for co-design and co-creative design, where students are trained in methods to include children in the design process. This has led to that many student projects are now focusing on improving children's lives and positions in society. Through close collaboration between the city, the academia and the research, we make our cities child-friendly and socially sustainable.

Catherine Paterson, children's culture designer and university lecturer at HDK-Valand, presents the profession and its role in city development for children and young people.

Anna Hydén, children's culture designer and project manager at Röhsska museum, shares experiences and challenges from urban planning projects involving children and young people in Gothenburg.
