Abstract

Southern Africa has been identified as a climate change hotspot, where temperatures are rising at twice the global rate and rainfall is decreasing and showing signs of delayed onset. While trees in this region have evolved under hot and dry conditions providing a level of resilience under these climate changes, little is understood about how they will respond to these changes. From the Succulent Karoo and Namib biomes across to the semi-arid and mesic savannas of Southern Africa, this talk highlights the growing evidence for observed impacts of climate change on Southern African trees, with new data trying to understand the underlying physiological mechanisms behind tree responses to temperature and water stress in this climate change hotspot.
