Peace Day May 8 1945 marked a step towards a better world, as did the founding of the United Nations as a peacekeeping organization. Today, the UN’s mission seems more challenging than ever. We’re once again amidst a time of war and conflicts, hatred and polarization. What realistic hopes can we have for an organization once established to prevent a third world war? What can the UN achieve in today’s growing array of terrifying war zones?

Despite increased geopolitical tensions, the UN remains the primary arena for addressing both acute conflicts and global challenges such as pandemics and climate change. Nevertheless, questions arise regarding the UN’s potential and effectiveness amid the escalating wars and humanitarian crises of our time. How does increased polarization and nationalism affect the UN’s efficiency as a peacekeeping organization? How can the UN continue to play a crucial role in future multilateral cooperation, and what tools are at its disposal? What other alternatives, organizations, and mechanisms can complement and support the UN in various contexts?
