Prestigious prizes announced by the Schumpeter Society

The International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society announced the winners of the Schumpeter Young Scholar Award and the Schumpeter Prize during the ISS2024 conference in Gothenburg. This year the Schumpeter Prize jury introduced a new format, and the prize was awarded to both an article and a book.

The two awards were announced at the Monday conference dinner, held at Kooperativet, a repurposed industrial building with food-trucks and designed for networking. Uwe Cantner, Professor at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, first provided an historical insight into the International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society and the bi-annual ISS conferences. The ISS2024 in Gothenburg, organized together with Gothenburg U-GOT KIES was the 20th in the series. Uwe Cantner particularly thanked Professor Horst Hanusch, Professor at University of Augsburg, for donating to the new Schumpeter Young Scholar Award.

Schumpeter Young Scholar Award

Catherine Beaudry, Professor at Polytechnique Montreal, announced the winner of the Schumpeter Young Scholar Award, who was selected by a jury from the 10 PhD student workshops and more than 40 submissions. This is the first year Schumpeter Young Scholar Award is given, and it was awarded to Lukas Dreier, PhD student at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, for his research entitled “The inventor contribution – patent value relationship”.

Schumpeter Prize awarded to both article and book

Patrick Llerena, Professor at the University of Strasbourg, announced the Schumpeter Prize, on behalf of the jury that constituted of six professors from different countries and specializations. The jury considered 16 submissions, of which more than half were books and the rest articles. The Schumpeter Prize jury introduced a new format for the Schumpeter Prize this year. The prize was awarded to one article and one book.

The Schumpeter Prize for a contribution via an article was attributed to Nicola De Liso (University of Salento, IT), Serena Arima (University of Salento, IT) and Giovanni Filatrella (University of Sannio, IT), for the article Is the “sailing-ship effect“ misnamed ? a statistical inquiry of the case sail vs steam in maritime transportation, in Industrial and Corporate Change, vol.32, pp. 975 - 999, 2023.

The Schumpeter Prize for a contribution via a book was attributed to Giovanni Dosi (Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, Pisa, IT) and the book The foundations of Complex Evolving Economies: Part I - Innovation, Organization and Industrial Dynamics, Oxford University Press, 2023.

Broman Scholarship to Giovanni Dosi

Maureen McKelvey, Professor at the School of Business, Economics and Law,University of Gothenburg, announced that Giovanni Dosi, Professor at the Institute of Economics at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, is awarded a Broman Scholarship, from the Broman Foundation. Giovanni Dosi will become a visiting researcher at the Gothenburg U-GOT KIES centre and Department of Economy and Society, School of Business Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg,  for the coming 18 months.
