Jordars innehåll av kol och kväve kan både mildra klimatförändringar eller förvärra. Globalt innehåller marken mer kol än vad som finns i växterna. Men genom växternas fotosyntes tillförs och lagras kol (och kväve) in i jorden, som vid störningar av marken kan avgå till luften som koldioxid och lustgas. Särskilt torvjordar innehåller mycket organiskt material, som lagrats upp under våta förhållanden. Dessa marker utgör en liten del av landytan (3%) men innehåller nästan 30% av markkolet. I Sverige finns mycket våtmarker där de dikade årligen avger 11 Tg CO2-ekvivalenter (10 upphöjt till12 g eller miljoner ton) vilket kan jämförs med att vägtrafiken avger 18 Tg. Det är möjligt att åtgärda dessa marker så att emissionerna bara blir 1/10 genom att göra dem till våtmarker igen. Det har vi visat genom mätningar i bl.a. Skogaryd och modellering med CoupModellen.
Samarbetet med Miljöekonomi vid Handelshögskolan, GU, har också visat att det är samhällsekonomiskt lönsamt att återväta dränerade torvmarker, även om markägaren själv kan förlora inkomster.
Lustgas (N2O) är en långlivad och nästan 300 ggr starkare växthusgas än koldioxid. Den bildas i marken av bakterier då det finns mycket frigjort kväve och förhållandena i marken pendlar mellan syrerikt och syrefattigt. Andra faktorer påverkar också, som t.ex. jorden pH-värde. Jordbruket ses som den största källan till lustgas. Vanligtvis kopplas hur mycket N2O som bildas till kvävegivans storlek, men vi har genom mätningar vid Logården och Lanna visat låga emissioner när kvävegivan är mindre eller lika med 100 kg N per hektar och år. Det är vanligtvis strax efter gödslingen som emissionstoppar kan mätas, men sen är emissioner oftast försumbart små. Så har vi också sett i salixodling på jordbruksmark. Dessa mätningar har gjorts på lerjordar som tidigare ansetts vara problemjordar med risk för höga emissioner.
