Om Christina Tente

(she/her)

I am a PhD candidate in Art History and Visual Studies in collaboration with the Hasselblad Foundation. With my research, I explore and analyse a visual culture of the COVID-19 global pandemic as it was portrayed in press photography between January-December 2020. Through affect theory, iconography, and visual discourse analysis, I seek for dominant visual themes and potentially iconic photographs of the pandemic. Additionally, departing from the complexities of being-in-a-pandemic and their press photographic translations, I reflect on the role of photography as a generator of affect and as a tool of orientation (Ahmed, 2006), through which spectators, viewers, or citizens of photography (Azoulay, 2009) make (sense of the) world.

Before starting my PhD, I obtained my Bachelor's in Journalism and Media Studies (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), a Master's in Film and Cultural Studies (University of Athens), and a Master's in Visual Culture (Lund University). My academic interests include photography, affect theory, posthuman philosophy, nonhuman photography, dance research, transspecies encounters, and memes.
