Ellen Lust är grundare av och föreståndare för Institutet för styrning och lokal utveckling vid Yale University (grundat 2013) och Göteborgs Universitet (grundat 2015), och är professor på Statsvetenskapliga institutionen vid Göteborgs Universitet. Hon fick sin M.A. i moderna Mellanöstern- och Nordafrikastudier (1993) och PhD i statsvetenskap från the University of Michigan (1997). Tidigare har hon varit fakultetsmedlem vid Rice University (1997-2000) och vid Yale University (2000-2015), föreståndare för the Center for Middle East Studies vid Yale University, samt gästforskare vid the Institute of Graduate Studies (Genéve, Schweitz) och the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution vid NYU.
Ellen har utfört fältarbete och undersökningar i Algeriet, Egypten, Jordanien, Libyen, Malawi, Marocko, Palestina, Syrien, Tunisien och Zambia. Hon är författare till flertalet böcker, läroböcker och artiklar, inklusive den nyligen publicerade boken Everyday Choices: The Role of Competing Authorities and Social Institutions in Politics and Development, (Cambridge University Press, 2022). Ellens nuvarande forskning undersöker sociala institutioners och lokala myndigheters roll inom styrning. Hon leder också GLDs arbete med att utveckla ett verktyg för att systematiskt mäta subnationella variationer inom styrning.
Hon är medgrundare till the Transitional Governance Project, grundande Associate Editor på Middle East Law and Governance, och har varit rådgivare och konsult inom organisationer som Carter Center, Freedom House, NDI, UNDEF, UNDP, USAID och Världsbanken.
