Om Mats Björkman

I’m a researcher within Ecosystem Science, focusing on current and future changes in cold regions. I have a background in Biology, Environmental and Atmospheric science connected to biosphere-atmosphere as well as cryosphere-atmosphere interaction and exchange processes. My research interest spans from changes in vegetation and soil microbial composition to changes in the carbon and nutrient cycles, but also includes the chemical, physical and biological processes of seasonal snow.

Currently I investigate the long-term effects of permafrost degradation in two major projects: “Permafrost thaw – decadal responses to climate change (PERMTHAW)” and “Thawing permafrost soils – long-term impacts on ecosystems C and N dynamics” funded by EU-Horizon2020 and FORMAS, respectively. Both these projects utilise a natural permafrost degradation gradient in the northern part of Sweden. More information about the projects and pictures can be found at Alpine and Polar Ecology.

I’m also involved in the establishment of the international cross-disciplinary Svalbard Snow Network, with the aim to facilitate and strengthen snow related research in the Svalbard archipelago.
