Om Philipp Wanner

I am an Associate Professor (Docent) in Contaminant Hydrogeology at the Earth Science Department of the University of Gothenburg and the head of the IsoGot Laboratory. I am also a principal investigator (PI) of the North American Consortium for Field-Focused Groundwater Research, and a member of the steering group of the Centre for Future Chemical Risk Assessment and Management (FRAM).

My research focuses on the behavior of legacy and emerging contaminants such as chlorinated solvents, plastic particles, pesticides, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aquatic systems providing the basis for remediating contaminated sites.

Current Projects:

Currently, I have three running research projects, which are funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR), and FORMAS, respectively:

VR Project (PI): Plastic and pesticides in agricultural soils – A hazardous combination for groundwater systems and drinking water supplies worldwide? (2022 - 2026)

This project aims to determine the migration of plastic particles through agricultural soils and whether plastic particles in agricultural soils enhance pesticide transport into underlying groundwater systems and drinking water supplies.

Postdoc: Swagatam Chakraborty

FORMAS Project (PI): Artificial groundwater recharge – A shortcut for harmful per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) into groundwater systems and drinking water supplies – Can we avoid this? (2022 - 2026)

In this project, we aim to determine the input of harmful poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) into groundwater systems and drinking water supplies caused by artificial groundwater recharge and to identify possible prevention options.

PhD Student: Tabea Mumberg (Main Supervisor)

FORMAS Project (Co-PI): Sustainable innovative drinking water treatment solutions for large-scale water supply and reuse (2023 - 2027)

The overall goal of this project is to ensure the sustainability of municipal drinking water supplies by developing new innovative treatment processes for removing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), dissolved organic matter (DOM), and other contaminants.

Involved Universities: University of Gothenburg, Swedish University of Agricultural Science (SLU), University of Uppsala, Chalmers, Lund University.

Previous Projects:

Carl Trygger Foundation Project (Main PI): Determining chlorinated solvent biodegradation in contaminated groundwater systems and its implications for remediation (2022 - 2024).

This project aimed to determine chlorinated solvent biodegradation in contaminated groundwater systems and its implications for remediating contaminated sites.

Teaching:

At the Department of Earth Sciences, I teach the course Environmental Earth Sciences with a focus on water quality (GV2003) at the Bachelor's level.
