English: Specialized Studies in Linguistics: Pop Culture and the English Language
About
This course examines English as it is encountered in popular media such as film, TV, the internet, music, etc. A multi-layered, multi-perspective approach is used to cover a broad range of topics such as standard vs non-standard English; discourse as social practice; cultural semiotics; the language of persuasion, media representations of non-standard dialects and the construction and representation identity in selected subcultures.
Prerequisites and selection
Entry requirements
30 credits introduction level + 22,5 credits intermediate course.
Selection
Selection is based upon the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 165 credits.
