About Pernilla Myrne

I obtained my PhD from the University of Gothenburg in 2008 after successfully defending my doctoral thesis in Arabic titled Narrative, Gender and Authority in ʿAbbāsid Literature on Women, which deals with texts about women from the 9th and 10th centuries. In the thesis, I examine hierarchical structures and representation of women’s agency in different genres.

I spent 2011 and 2012 at New York University, where I worked with a project titled Gender and Pleasure in Medieval Arabic Erotic Literature , funded through a postdoctoral scholarship from the Swedish Research Council.

I have worked as a senior lecturer in Arabic at the University of Gothenburg since January 2015.

I am currently working on a monograph titled Female Sexuality in the Medieval Islamic World: Gender and Sex in Arabic Literature, with a planned release in 2019. I am also writing a monograph in Swedish on female poets and singers in the Abbasid Caliphate, titled En sång till kalifen: kvinnor, makt och underhållning i medeltida Bagdad [a song for the caliph: women, power and entertainment in medieval Baghdad].

Research

In my research, I have mainly examined the representation of women in pre-modern Arabic literature, attitudes to sexuality in medieval Islam, as well as women as creative subjects. I am also interested in social history, in particular the role of women and slaves in society.

Research Projects

2015-2018: Love, Body, and Desire: Attitudes to Erotic Love and Women’s Sexuality in Pre-modern Arabic Literature, funded by the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation.

The project aims to investigate how the intellectual climate during the Abbasid Caliphate contributed to attitudes to erotic love and women’s sexuality in Arab-Islamic literature about sex and marriage, and how these differ in different discourses, synchronically and diachronically. Above all, I study a unique work from the late 900s, the oldest Arabic-Islamic erotic handbook, Jawāmiʿ al-ladhdha [encyclopaedia of pleasure].

2018–2021: Medieval Arabic Sex Manuals; Manuscript Tradition and Reception

A main aim of this project is to identify the manuscript tradition for medieval Arabic sex manuals, which was a popular genre for many centuries. I will also explore the reception of these books by reviewing and analysing the preserved manuscripts and examining how the various books have been commented on and quoted in later literature.

Previous Research Projects

2012–2015: Eloquent women: Genre, rhetoric and gender in early Arabic literature, funded by the Swedish Research Council

In this project, I examined how the words of women were represented in early Arabic literature. Women were marginalised in the early written Arabic culture, as they did not learn to read and write to the same degree as men. Nevertheless, the classical Arabic literature is full of portrayals of eloquent women, whose words are quoted with admiration. They often used their rhetorical skills to help their families, or simply to highlight their own qualities. The project focused on this rhetoric and these women.

Teaching

I have taught Arabic and Arabic history and literature since 1995, as well as Middle Eastern studies (history and culture) since 2005.
