Joint International, German, Swedish, Finnish Scientific Diving Training Course 2022
In 2022, the 5th international training course for scientific diving will be jointly organized by the Biological Station Helgoland (Germany), Kristineberg Center (Sweden), the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research and University of Helsinki, Tvärminne Zoological Station (Finland).
Course description
The training course is carried out to meet the ESD standards published by the European Scientific Diving Panel (ESDP) which is a member of the MARS network.
The practical part of the course will be held in two parts from 10 October (arrival on the 9) – 23 October in Tvärminne (Finland) and from 24 October–12 November in Kristineberg (latest departure 13), Fiskebäckskil (Sweden). An e-learning seminar on scientific diving will be held before the practical part of the course.
To join the course, a competence test comprising a theoretical and practical examination on the level of CMAS** or PADI Rescue-diver must be passed. Respective tests will be offered in Sweden (Kristineberg), Finland (Helsinki) and Germany (Bremen). The course includes an intense training in professional diving skills for scientific purposes in theory and praxis and ends with a theoretical and practical examination by the “German Examination Board for Scientific Divers” (Deutsche Prüfungskommission für Forschungstaucher) and by Dykarskolan, Stockholm. Successful participants will be certified according to the respective national rules for Scientific Diving which are at least equivalent to the “European Scientific Diver” standards according to the ESDP framework. These respective national scientific diving certificate can act as a mobility scientific diving certificate within the ESDP member countries.
Entry requirements
- Being a master or PhD student or a postdoctoral fellow or early career scientist in an aquatic science discipline.
- Providing an abstract about your research and how scientific diving is planned to be included within your research.
- Holding a valid recreational dive certificate on at least the level of PADI Rescue Diver, CMAS**/VDST T2 (Silver) or equivalent.
- Passing a competence test on level CMAS** / PADI Rescue-diver in theory and practice.
- Having a dive record of at least 1800 min (30 h) open water dive time with at least 700 min deeper than 15 m and 40 min deeper than 25m.
- Have documented experience of diving using a dry suit (15+ logged dives).
- Have documented proof of CPR training1 within the last year and a documented certification of “lifeguard” level 2 or pool life-guard training.
- Valid health examination for work diving according to the respective countries’ health and work environment legislations.
- Diving equipment will be provided during the course. Proper disinfection protocols will be used, and the handout gears will be personalized and not shared with other participants during the course. For best fit it is good to bring your own drysuit, hood, gloves, fins, bottom timer (computer) but it can also be provided during the course. Personal mask (half-face) and snorkel must be brought as a sanitary precaution.

Course fees
The course fee is 1600 Euro. The course fee includes teaching, administration, the Swedish and the German examinations, accommodation, facility use (including boating) and food at Tvärminne Zoological Station, Finland. Accommodation, food, travels for the examination committees and teachers, facility use (including boating) and equipment rental at Kristineberg Center is financed by a grant from the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences. Participant travel costs are not supported by the grant or included in the course fee.

1 Because there are no „European“ certificates for CPR, „Life-guard level 2“ and „Professional diver health examination“, the respective national certificates are accepted if they are equivalent to the Swedish or German certificates.
