VIDEO: Inside the Grassroots Sustainability Exhibition

Publicerad

At the exhibition The Value of Grassroots Initiatives for Sustainability at the School of Business, Economics and Law, the focus extended beyond addressing food waste to emphasize the importance of creating spaces where new norms, such as solidarity, can take root—especially in times of uncertainty.

Visitors were introduced to the findings from the first study of the research project Circular Grassroots Innovation for Sustainable and Inclusive Urban Transitions, inspired by the Solidarity Fridge initiative.

Strengthening Norms for Sustainable Transitions

Associate Professor María José Zapata Campos, based at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg, shares key insights from the researchers' findings.

– One of the main findings has been to show how it is possible to strengthen norms that pave the way towards sustainable and just transitions, such as sharing, caring for others, and gifting the food distributed here. Perhaps even more importantly, it highlights how organizations like universities play an extremely important role as role models. These are institutions with very strong legitimacy in society, meaning that whatever we do here can be enormously amplified. In this way, we can actively contribute to accelerating the spread of these norms, she says.

By utilizing resources such as university’s facilities and logistics, the Solidarity Fridge initiative has been active for over two years, creating a platform where surplus food from local shops and bakeries is distributed on campus. This not only reduces food waste but also provides tangible opportunities for people to actively engage in sustainability efforts.
