Cornells forskning har bland annat publicerats i Journal of Politics, Comparative Political Studies, Governance, European Journal of Political Research, Public Administration, Journal of Democracy och Democratization.
Cornell har tillsammans med Jørgen Møller och Svend-Erik Skaaning skrivit monografin Democratic Stability in an Age of Crisis: Reassessing the Interwar period (2020, Oxford University Press).
