Min forskning är inriktad på att förstå den hormonella regleringen av födointag, energibalans, ämnesomsättning (metabolism), tillväxt och beteende hos fisk. Jag är särskilt inriktad på att studera hormonet ghrelins funktion och hur det regleras. Ghrelin är ett hormon som stimulerar födointag och ökar inlagringen av fett hos däggdjur. Jag är också intresserad av kopplingen till tilväcthormon (GH) och insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I).
Min forskning ställer frågor som är av grundläggande karaktär för att förstå mekanismerna för hur djur reglerar intaget av mängden energi som de lagrar eller kan växa på och t ex effekter av miljöförändringar, men som också är av intresse för fiskodlingsindustrin framförallt vad gäller effekter av odlingsmiljön, vaccinering och olika foder.
Min forskning sker för närvarande främt inom tre olika projekt. I det nordisk samarbetsprojektet "Arctaqua" samarbetar jag med Nord universitet, Bodö, om odling av havskatt och att finna hållbara foder som passar till arten. Gärna med lokala foderråvaror. Ett annat nordiskt samarbetsprojekt som jag leder är "Physiology shapes the happy salmon – a systems approach to sustainable feeds for stimulation of growth, welfare and survival (Happy salmon)". Jag leder också ett projekt som handlar om att undersöka fysiologiska effekter av vaccinering av regnbåge.
Jag är med i två centrum som handlar om sjömat, SWEMARC och Blå Mat. Båda centrumen vill verka för forskning och kunskapsspridning för hållbar sjömatsproduktion. SWEMARC fokuserar på vattenbruk, medan Blå Mat handlar om all typ av sjömat. De delar av forskningen där jag är aktiv syftar till att uppnå en miljövänlig och resurseffektivt vattenbruk. Detta omfattar utvecklingen av foder baserade på hållbara råvaror från musslor och outnyttjade biprodukter från t ex sill och skaldjur, och odling av fisk i recirkulerande akvakultursystem (RAS) med minimala utsläpp.
Jag undervisar inom grundutbildningen i biologi på diverse olika kurser, t ex organismvärldens form och funktion, humanfysiologi, ekofysiologi, marina djur och djurs beteende. Jag undervisar också på receptarieprogrammet.
Till mina övriga uppdrag hör jag är Föreståndare för djurens skötsel och välfärd vad gäller vår djurexperimentella verksamhet. Jag är också institutionens likabehandlingsrepresentant. Jag sitter från våren 2022 med i styrgruppen för programverksamheten vid Jonsereds herrgård, en arena för samverkan med allmänheten.
