Bakgrund
Efter studier i psykologi, pedagogik, sociologi, filosofi och etnologi, avlade jag psykologexamen och lärarexamen 1972 och disputerade i psykologi 1975 vid Göteborgs universitet. År 1980 blev jag docent och 1994 professor vid Göteborgs universitet. Utöver forskning och undervisning har jag haft ett antal administrativa uppdrag, bl.a. som prefekt vid psykologiska institutionen under nästan 10 år. Under åren 2008-2013 var jag tjänstledig på heltid för uppdraget som chef och huvudsekreterare för Forskningsrådet för Arbetsliv och Socialvetenskap (FAS), sedermera Forskningsrådet för Hälsa, Arbetsliv och Välfärd, Forte.
Undervisning
Jag handleder framför allt doktorander.
Forskningsintresse
Min forskning har rört sig om språk, kommunikation, kognition och tänkande hos barn och vuxna. Från början var intresset riktat mot olika aspekter av samtal ansikte-mot-ansikte. Det gällde t.ex. strukturer i samtal och minne för vad som sagts. Efterhand kom funktionshinder som rör språk och kommunikation att intressera mig. Vi gjorde tidiga studier av talsyntes för blinda och begriplighet i talsyntes. Barns utveckling av språk och kommunikation är genomgående i min forskning. Bl.a. har vi studerat utvecklingen hos vanliga barn av förståelsen för att språkliga uttryck kan variera men ändå betyda samma sak. Mycket forskning har ägnats åt barn med funktionshinder: cerebral pares, ADHD, Asperger syndrom, autism, hörselnedsättning/dövhet och dyslexi. Där har vi studerat olika aspekter av språk, minne, social kognition och kommunikation.
Pågående forskning
Ett tvärkulturellt projekt om dyslexi håller på att rapporteras. Vi har undersökt språkliga och kognitiva funktioner hos 8-9-åringar med lässvårigheter i Sverige, Estland, Kanada och Kroatien med syfte att studera likheter och skillnader i relationer mellan läs- och skrivsvårigheterna och respektive språk. De fyra språken skiljer sig radikalt åt när det gäller relationen mellan skriftbild och hur orden uttalas. I ett annat projekt om dyslexi prövar vi ett datorbaserat träningsprogram för barn i 8-9-årsåldern. När det gäller döva barn studerar vi framför allt utvecklingen av den sociala kognitionen, förmågan att ta andras perspektiv, i förhållande till språkliga och kognitiva funktioner. Särskilt intressant är i vilken teckenspråkig miljö barnet vuxit upp i och vilket språk som använts i skolan. Fokus just nu är på döva barn i tidig ålder där vi studerar den sociala kognitionen med ögonrörelsemetodik. Frågeställningen är om döva barn med hörande föräldrar uppmärksammar samma saker som hörande barn med hörande föräldrar när de får titta på en animerat händelseförlopp.
