Maris Boyd Gillette är socialantropolog och filmskapare vars forskning undersöker hur kapitalistiska processer påverkar gruppidentiteter, materiell kultur och miljön, och ekonomiska verksamheter. Hon har studerat porslinarbetare och entreprenörer i Jingdezhen, sydöstra Kina (China's Porcelain Capital: The Rise, Fall and Reinvention of Ceramics in Jingdezhen, Bloomsbury 2016), Kinesiska muslimer i Xi'an, nordvästra Kina (Between Mecca and Beijing: Modernization and Consumption Among Urban Chinese Muslims, Stanford 2000), och olika frågor och ämne som berör hållbarhet i Europa och USA. Gillette har också skrivit om högre utbildning. Hon samarbetar ofta med kommuner, föreningar, och olika museer, där hon har skapat och samskapat olika utställningar och utbildningsinitiativ, till exempel på Campbell House Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, St Louis Art Museum och Missouri History Museum. Hon deltar ofta i initiativ för att skapa samhällsengagemang, bland annat kring hållbarhet. Hon var co-grundare av det digitala medieprojektet Muslim Voices of Philadelphia, för vilket hon fick en Courage in Media Award från the Council on American Islamic Relations år 2012. Hon har varit professor i socialantropologi på Institutionen för Globala studier sedan 2017. Hon undervisar i antropologi, globala studier, och samhällsvetenskapliga miljöstudier på grund, avancerad och forskningsnivå, och handleder doktorander i antropologi och samhällsvetenskapliga miljöstudier.
