Stefan Ekman är docent och doktor i engelsk litteratur och disputerade 2010 mtied en avhandling om hur miljöer används i fantasylitteratur; han har även en magisterexamen i nationalekonomi med inriktning mot utveckling och miljö. 2013 till 2021 arbetade han på Svensk nationell datatjänst (SND) som utbildningskoordinator och domänspecialist med inriktning mot humaniora, och sedan 2024 arbetar han som senior rådgivare på SND. Hans forskning undersöker dels hur fiktiva världar kan konstrueras för kritisk analys, dels hur samhällskritik framförs i s.k. urban fantasy. Inom den senare inriktningen publicerade han nyligen Urban Fantasy: Exploring Modernity through Magic (Lever Press, 2024) som kan laddas ned med öppen tillgång.
