Marine Microbial Ecology Projects
Subject: Marine Biology
Level: 60HP Master’s level
Supervisor: Carina Bunse
Project Background
The Marine Microbial Ecology (MMEco) research group study the microbes of the sea.How do they interact with other microbial organisms? Which roles and functions do microbes have in the ocean? We are now looking for enthusiastic students to join our group! You can find some examples of our current projects on our MMEco website.
Project Description
Marine Microbial Ecology offers a wide range of fascinating student projects that explore the complex role of microorganisms in marine ecosystems.
These projects often combine fieldwork, laboratory experiments and advanced analytical techniques (e.g. molecular tools or flow cytometry) to address pressing ecological and environmental issues.
Below are some examples of research project opportunities:
- Investigate the effects of environmental gradients, such as temperature and nutrient availability, on microbial plankton and their role in biogeochemical cycles.
- Analyse the interactions between marine bacteria to understand their collective impact on marine food webs
- Analyse the ecological niches of different microbial groups in the Baltic Sea and Skagerak/Kattegat
- Use bioinformatics and ecological matrices to compare seasonal dynamics in different marine datasets
- Use genomic tools to study the ecology of microbial communities and their adaptation to changing environmental conditions.
