The width and thickness of the Norwegian Coastal Current
Detta är ett förslag på examensarbete för kandidat- eller masternivå vid Institutionen för marina vetenskaper. Examensarbeten vid Institutionen för marina vetenskaper görs självständigt och bedöms individuellt.
Subject: Physical Oceanography
Main supervisor: Göran Broström
Suitable level and length: Master, project can be adjusted to suitable length of MSc project
Suitable time period: all year round
Location: Göteborg
Background
The Norwegian Coastal Current carries large amount of freshwater from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea northwards. It is strong current with a strong eddy field, and its width and thickness varies with season. It is wider and shallower in summer, and the exchange of water into Norwegian fjords takes place during summer (which is opposite of Swedish fjords where exchange is mainly during winter).
Project description
The student will carry out a literature review on the problem and evaluate key processes that control the dynamics of the Norwegian Coastal current, as well as how the exchange of water in some fjords are taking place. The student will further investigate what observations and suitable model results that can be used for evaluating the strength of the processes.
The project aims at evaluating existing model output rather that developing a model setup.
Method
The method involves both creating analytical tools as well as analyzing observations and model results (mainly from the Norwegian Meteorological institute).
The project will be carried out in close collaboration with scientists at the Norwegian Meteorological institute, Norway.
