Pediatric Surgery

Welcome to the research area of Pediatric Surgery. We conduct research and education on conditions in children and youth that require gastroenterological, urological, oncological, traumatological (including burn care), and thoracic surgical evaluation, care and treatment. While conditions within general surgery are more common, specialized pediatric surgery deals with the realm of uncommon diagnoses.

Specialized pediatric and youth surgery primarily involves the evaluation, care, and treatment of children and youth with congenital abnormalities in the lungs, diaphragm, gastrointestinal tract, abdominal wall, or urinary organs. Surgical correction of congenital malformations is an example of highly specialized surgery. Furthermore, specialized pediatric and adolescent surgery also encompasses advanced tumor surgery. Many of these conditions are not treated within any other surgical specialty, and the surgery, often reconstructive, should function throughout the patient's remaining lifespan.

Research and Education

Research

Research within pediatric surgery is primarily conducted within the specialized field of pediatric and adolescent surgery. The research aims, in a broader sense, to develop new healthcare and treatment methods for patient groups in need of advanced pediatric and adolescent surgery, particularly in cases where treatment outcomes are currently suboptimal or where evidence is lacking. To achieve this goal, there is a need for the assessment of short-term and long-term outcomes in pediatric and adolescent surgery, based on research findings, patient/parent perspectives, and a comparison of function and quality of life with healthy children and adolescents. In some cases, the follow-up of patients' function and quality of life into adulthood is also necessary. In addition, animal experimental research and genetic studies are needed and conducted.

Education

Our educational programs are aimed at those who are curious and want to deepen their knowledge in the field of pediatric and adolescent surgery. Education is primarily provided as part of the medical program and for physicians specializing in pediatric surgery.

Pediatric urologists also provide training for licensed healthcare professionals (such as nurses, physiotherapists, physicians) who wish to enhance their knowledge in urotherapy. Urotherapy encompasses both bladder and bowel dysfunction and includes sexual dysfunction in this context. The field of urotherapy is based on behavioral therapy principles and complements various healthcare areas, including gynecology, urology, pediatric care, primary care, geriatric care, and rehabilitation.
