Aesthetics unit
Welcome to the Unit for Aesthetics at the Department of Cultural Sciences. Here you will find research and courses in the disciplines of Film Studies, Art History and Visual Studies, and Musicology.
The researchers and doctoral students in our unit are linked to a number of research projects large and small. The common thread running through all three of the unit’s disciplines is that they focus on visual and aural artistic expressions and media forms – in essence sound, image and form, plus the technologies that these embody.
Our research has both a historical and a contemporary focus, with the political and social significances of the artistic expressions also an area of study. Our research interests are by no means restricted to what we see and hear, however. Studies of scents and other sensory inputs in relation to the artistic expressions, as well as physical and psychological experiences, also form part of what interests us.
On the educational front, we have a broad range of courses at undergraduate and Master’s level in all three disciplines. And if you are interested in further study after this, positions are also available for doctoral students. At undergraduate level, in addition to freestanding courses and course packages, we also have a Bachelor’s programme: Media, Aesthetics and Cultural Entrepreneurship.
