The University of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, consisting of students from the classical music programmes at the Academy of Music and Drama, meets one of Europe's leading big bands, Bohuslän Big Band. All under the direction of the legendary conductor and arranger Vince Mendoza, who has been invited as artist in residence at the Academy of Music and Drama, thanks to generous support from the Stena Foundation.
The concert offers original music written by Mendoza for symphony orchestra and big band – beautiful and swinging jazz melodies with rich and imaginative orchestrations. But that’s not all! You will also hear future composers and arrangers who, in the spring of 2024, have written new music under the guidance of Mendoza. Don’t miss the opportunity to be the first to hear several innovative works following the theme “New World/Old World” by composers Jakob Evert, Maryam Javidmehr, Alexandros Koutsogiannis, Alma Stensson and Daniel Quigley.
For several years, the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg has had a successful collaboration with the Bohuslän Big Band. In a joint venture, the University of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Bohuslän Big Band come together for the first time for a unique collaboration under the leadership of conductor and arranger Vince Mendoza.
The students have been selected by Vince Mendoza through a composition competition arranged by the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg.
