Career Tips for Humanities Students

Below are our best tips for a smooth transition between studies and professional life. As a student at the Faculty of Humanities, you are always welcome to seek help from our study counselors and career counselors.

  • Clarify your skills and experiences – Recruiters and managers are looking for skills, experience, and personality that they believe will fit in their workplace. Your task is to articulate your skills and experiences so they are understandable in a professional context. Feel free to get help from friends, classmates, and family to formulate your points professionally!
  • Create your own bucket list – Your dreams, ideas, and visions for the future can be important in guiding you to find your own path. Write them down and explore how you can achieve them!
  • Be open to different opportunities – It’s impossible to know what life has in store, so be open and curious! Consider various roles and industries that can provide valuable experience and open doors for future career steps.
  • Apply broadly and think progression – A common trap is to believe that you will land your dream job right after graduation. Instead, aim for a first “entry-level job” to get in touch with working life and broaden your work experience!
  • Keep yourself in good spirits – Job hunting in a serious and professional manner is a full-time job. It’s easy to get discouraged at times, so it’s extra important to keep yourself in good spirits while you’re searching for a job!
