Fee-paying students need to pay tuition fees to study at the University of Gothenburg. Find out if you need to pay, how to make a payment and what applies if you need a refund.
Who needs to pay tuition fees in Sweden?
If you are a citizen of a country outside the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland you normally need to pay application and tuition fees. There are some exceptions.

Application fee
If you are a citizen of a country outside the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland you need to pay an application fee of SEK 900 when you apply for courses or programs at universityadmissions.se. The application fee is administered by University Admissions, also known as the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR).
How much is the tuition fee?
The tuition fee amount depends on the course or program. You can find the first instalment on the page for each course or program. Use our Course and program search to find the right amount. Please note that the tuition fee amount applicable to you depends on your year of entry.
Payment instructions
You can pay your tuition fee by bank transfer, card payment or Bankgiro.
After you have received the Notification of Selection Results, an email with payment instructions will be sent to the email address listed in your user account at universityadmissions.se.
Newly admitted students must pay the tuition fee for the autumn semester by 1 May. If you are already enrolled, the payment deadline is 15 December for the spring semester, and 15 August for the autumn semester.
We recommend paying by debit or credit card. This applies to all admitted fee-paying students, regardless of country. Card payments are faster and help to ensure that your payment is efficiently matched to your tuition fees. This can assist your residence permit application process at the Swedish Migration Agency as their assessment cannot start until the tuition fee payment is registered on our account.
The Swedish Migration Agency is notified when the university has registered your tuition fee payment.
Be careful when using third parties to pay
Be careful if you use a third party to pay your tuition fee. There have been cases where students have unknowingly become involved in fraud because an intermediary used stolen credit card details. When such transactions are reversed, it can affect your admission or residence permit.
According to the University of Gothenburg’s refund policy, we can only make a refund to the person or account that made the original payment. If a third party made the payment and can no longer be contacted, you may not be able to recover your money.
To avoid these risks, pay directly from your own account or via a reliable, authorised payment provider.
Tuition fee refund
To apply for a tuition fee refund, please contact tuitionfees@gu.se. It is not possible to receive a tuition fee refund without first notifying the department in charge of your program at the University of Gothenburg of cancellation or interruption of the program.
It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the terms of refund are met before an application is sent to the university.
The processing time for tuition fee refund cases is long and it can take up to 4 months before your case is completed. Please note that the application for a tuition fee refund must be made within one year from the payment date of the tuition fee.
Exemptions from paying tuition fees
If you are currently required to pay tuition fees but believe that you meet the requirements for exemption, you can ask us to reassess your tuiton fee status.

To request a re-assessment, upload documents that support your request to your personal account on universityadmissions.se. You must also send a request to tuitionfees@gu.se. The tuition fee team will re-assess your fee status and inform you of the decision by email.
Legal background
Under the Ordinance on application fees and tuition fees at higher education institutions (SFS 2010:543), universities shall charge a tuition fee for first or second-cycle education from those who are not citizens of an EEA member state or Switzerland.
Rules on tuition fees at the University of Gothenburg includes the national and local rules applicable on payment of tuition fees for first and second-cycle education for those who are obliged with a tuition fee condition.
