Summary

This course is based on the theoretical and practical applications of geophysical methods, focusing on Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Magnetometry. These two important survey methods are introduced, compared, and evaluated, and then field training is given. At the end of the course students should have an understanding of how, why, and when the methods should be applied, as well as how the results can be used to inform archaeological excavation and conservation practice.

About

In this course we study geophysical and prospecting methods with a focus on ground penetrating radar and magnetometry. You will gain a broad insight into the use of these and other methods as well as examples of their current applications. The course will highlight the underlying technical aspects of the equipment as well as the problems and possibilities that the methods present in terms of archaeological research and conservation practice. Additionally, you will gain a basic understanding of how geophysical prospection is practically carried out in the field.

The main two methods will be demonstrated during hands-on fieldwork exercises. This course consists of two sub-courses: 1. Archaeological exploration, theory and method (5 credits) and 2. Field exercises (2.5 credits).
