Course Description
This course will address labour market patterns in the global south and north, in Europe and in Sweden, including patterns of labour market attainment and working conditions for migrant workers. Various ways in which employment relates to migration, integration, sustainable working life, health outcomes, return and remittance-sending will be addressed. The idea of ‘decent work’ is central to international labour migration. Employment in destination countries is often characterised by informality, poor working conditions and low wages. Migrants in search of better work and wages often find themselves battling for jobs on the lowest rungs of the labour market. Equally important, labour migration and labour migrants are often implicated in effecting the working conditions, terms and wages in the broader labour market in their destination countries. The course will explore various forms of work-related rights violations and the precarisation of labour as well as specific challenges and opportunities, including the gender dimension of access to decent work and self-reliance. Students will also gain an insight into migrant agency and the challenges and opportunities that migrants face on the institutional and organizational levels, and reasons behind failures or success in finding meaningful employment.
