Course Description
The course engages students in exploring a range of scholarly debates concerning both theoretical elaborations and empirical studies within the broad field of international migration. This encompasses the dynamics of immigration, emigration and integration. The course combines surveys of general theoretical and empirical developments with more specific analyses of various cases. This is done for the purpose of enhancing the students’ skills, both regarding their comprehensive understanding and their ability to carry out in-depth analysis. The purpose is to convey a dynamic perspective, whereby students become alive to migration’s multidimensional character and its historical contingencies, and the various ways in which this is captured within research. The course thus familiarizes students with developments at different levels (e.g. global, regional, national and local), as well as with the important interlinkages between these. Besides introducing key theoretical and conceptual tools as well as a range of empirical knowledge, the course also brings forward critical perspectives on current migration policy developments. This includes EU migration policy as well the North-South migration and development nexus that has risen to the top of the international policy and global governance agenda in recent decades.
