University of Gothenburg

Competition among universities

Invited Session: Monday 10th June, 15:30-16:30

Theme

Scientific research is inherently competitive. Not only researchers, but also universities compete - among others they compete for students, researchers, funding, and reputation. The dynamic interplay of overlapping and interdependent competitive processes in which universities are involved gives rise to complex and hard-to-predict patterns of outcomes. In this session, we will discuss initial findings from a large-scale interdisciplinary research project exploring the multidimensional nature of competition among universities and how it relates to scientific progress, technological innovation and the academic labor market. Based on these findings, some building blocks of an evolutionary economics of higher education will be proposed.
