About Jessica Hemmings

textiles, contemporary craft, postcolonial literature

I joined HDK in January of 2017 as Professor of Craft & Vice-Prefekt of Research and am currently Vice-Prefekt of Research for HDK-Valand. I supervise four PhD candidates who are undertaking projects that explore collective labour; digital and analogue image making in tapestry weaving; community weaving; blacksmithing, tools and the body. PhD supervision interests span contemporary craft (particularly textiles), decolonial approaches and the relationship between making and writing.

My own research interests focus on contemporary craft and understanding the contribution textiles make to contemporary society; representations of craft in postcolonial literature; how – and why – practitioners write. Indonesia and Zimbabwe are particular focus areas.

I am on the editorial board of Textile: the Journal of Cloth & Culture (Taylor & Francis) and Craft Research (Intellect), external examiner on the MA Textiles at the Royal College of Art, London (2017-2020) and held an honorary Adjunct Professorship at UNSW, Sydney Australia (2016-2018). I have been an invited external MA & PhD examiner in Australia, Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, New Zealand & USA and currently act as external PhD advisor for research projects at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, London College of Fashion & University College Dublin.
