The aim of this course is to enable students to get an understanding of the research frontier of selected sub-fields within Applied Microeconomics. The course is a mix of theoretical economics, data analysis and econometric techniques.   The course will include three broad topics – crime, corruption, and inequality mobility, and highlight literatures at the intersection of Labor Economics, Public Economics, Law and Economics, and Political Economy. 
 

The first part of the course focuses on topics within the area of intergenerational mobility. Specific topics include: the measurement of intergenerational mobility, theories of intergenerational transmission, and empirical approaches to decompose transmission channels and to evaluate the effect of various policies designed to promote social mobility and equality of opportunity.

It will be taught by Professor Mikael Lindahl in four lectures on January 20 and January 21, 2025. 
 

The second part of the course will focus on the economics of crime and criminal justice, and highlight, amongst other topics: the economic model of crime, discrimination in the criminal justice system, the role for social policies as crime control, prisons and recidivism, and the costs of crime.

It will be taught by Professor Randi Hjalmarsson in four lectures on January 22 and 23, 2025.
 

The third part will focus on corruption, with a particular focus on corruption in the educational and healthcare sectors.

It will be taught by Professor Andreea Mitrut in two lectures on January 24, 2025. 
 

An additional meeting will be scheduled in the spring – potentially virtually – for students to present research proposals.
