Om Hiroki Shibuya

Meiosis is a specialized form of cell division for producing haploid germ cells. Errors in meiosis lead to chromosomal aneuploidy, the leading cause of miscarriage and developmental and intellectual disabilities. The critical event during meiosis is the pairing and recombination of homologous chromosomes, which occurs during meiotic prophase I.
The pairing and recombination of homologous chromosomes increases genetic diversity, promotes evolution, and, more crucially, ensures the correct segregation of homologous chromosomes during the following cell divisions.

Our studies try to address the fundamental question of how pairing and recombination of homologous chromosomes are regulated on the molecular level during mammalian meiosis using the mouse as our model system. We employ a combination of genetic, molecular, cytological, and biochemical approaches. Specifically, we are pursuing the following major projects:

1: Dissection of telomere functions required for homologous pairing.
2: Screening for novel proteins regulating meiotic recombination.

We are actively looking for postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. If you are interested in our group, please inquire by contacting Hiroki directly by email (hiroki.shibuya@gu.se).
