About Ann-Kristin Jonasson

Presentation

I am a Ph. D. and senior lecturer in Political Science. I am also a member of the board of the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul (SRII).

Areas of interest and Current research

My research has mainly focused on the EU's democracy promotion, and how this relates to the prevention of violent extremism and terrorism, in the Mediterranean region, with a particular focus on Jordan and Turkey. I have also studied Islamist parties and democratic processes in these countries.

Currently, I am interested in how violent extremism is fought in Jordan and in how the teacher training can prepare teachers-to-be for counteracting violent extremism at school through civic education, in Sweden and Jordan.

My publications include the books The EU's Democracy Promotion and the Mediterranean Neighbours. Orientation, ownership and dialogue in Jordan and Turkey. London: Routledge (2013), shortlisted for the Council for European Studies (CES) 2014 European Studies Book Award Competition and At the Command of God. On the Political Linkage of Islamist Parties. Gothenburg: Statsvetenskapliga institutionen (2004, doctoral thesis) and previous articles such as "Turkey, its changing national identity and EU accession: Explaining the ups and downs in the Turkish democratization reforms", Journal of Contemporary European Studies 19, no 1 (2011), together with Elisabeth Johansson-Nogués, and “The EU and Jordan: Aligning Discourse and Practice on Democracy Promotion?”, European Foreign Affairs Review 22, no. 4 (2017), together with Madeleine Mezagopian.

Recent publications include "The Double-Edged Sword of Democracy: How Democracy Promotion Is Used in the European Union's Prevention of Terrorism in the Southern Mediterranean", Journal Of Regional Security, 2022, Vol. 17, Iss. 2, pp. 241-266 and "EU:s normspridning i en konfliktfylld värld: En existentiell nödvändighet med förhinder?", in EU:s inre och yttre gränser i en konfliktfylld värld, Stockholm: Santérus förlag (2023).

Teaching and tutoring

I am primarily teaching on the teacher's programme and European studies. At the teacher's programme, I teach on different variants of the course "Steering, organisation and assessment" and in social science. At European studies, I teach primarily at the master level on different courses related to the EU as a global actor, and I am responsible, together with Mats Andrén, for the master's thesis course. I also supervise and examine theses both on the teacher's programme and European studies.
