Bernt Wilhelmsson, pianist

Bernt Wilhelmsson grew up on the Island of Orust and started playing piano at the age of seven. He made his debut as a soloist in Beethoven's "Emperor Concerto" with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in 1997.

Bernt performs frequently with piano recitals and chamber music concerts. As a soloist he has performed piano concerts by Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninov, Schumann, Gershwin, Stenhammar and Stravinsky.

He has given concerts in Scotland, Iceland, Norway, the Baltic States, France, Czechia, the USA, Argentina and Canada and during his concert visits recorded for the music radio in Estonia, Latvia, Norway and at a number of occasions for Swedish Radio P2.

Since 2008 Bernt is Associate Professor in piano and chamber music at the University of Music and Drama in Gothenburg and is often heard at the Gothenburg Opera as an orchestral pianist.

Bernt has recorded two CDs; Swedish Piano Romanticism with piano music by Wilhelm Stenhammar and Emil Sjögren, and Debussy Works for piano.

Bernt has a soloist diploma from the Academy of Music and Drama at the University of Gothenburg and a piano teacher degree from the Ingesund Academy of Music. He has also studied in London with Irina Zaritskaya and in Vienna with Noel Flores.

Bernt Wilhelmsson, pedagogue

My goal as a teacher is that the student builds a stable solo basis based on a broad repertoire and develops a good self-esteem as a soloist and chamber musician.

Each student is unique and the individual piano lessons are based on the student's specific needs, both in a technical and artistic perspective.

During the group piano lessons the students focus on practicing performance and to listen actively, to be able to discuss musical issues based on the performance.

The students play in concerts both at school and outside school during the year. Each semester we invite guest teachers in order to give the students more perspectives on their development.

I have taught at the Academy of Music and Drama at the University of Gothenburg over 20 years and it´s fantastic to be a part of the creativity and innovation that exists here.
